Eat These 4 Foods This Summer for Better Skin and Hair

Posted on

We think that just-out-of-the-ocean beachy waves and sun-kissed skin are the ultimate #summergoals, but in order to get them, you should add a few specific foods to your diet. We rounded up four superfoods that can work some serious magic in building strong skin, hair, and nails.

Strengthen Hair With Portobello Mushrooms

Looking to grow some seriously luscious mermaid locks this summer? Up your vitamin D intake to stimulate hair follicle growth and prevent hair loss. For an easy way to incorporate it into your diet, look no further than portobello mushrooms. They are higher in vitamin D than button mushrooms, making them an ideal plant-based source. Use them as “buns” for your burger, or slice and sauté them up with onions as a side dish! If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, try chanterelle or oyster mushrooms!

Fight Breakouts with Brazil Nuts

Selenium is known as a powerful antioxidant that helps fight free radicals. Some studies have also found that the nutrient can also help decrease acne. Brazil nuts are the highest natural source of selenium you’ll find, making them a great addition to your diet for clear skin! Each one packs a huge selenium punch, so you only need one to two per day to meet your body’s requirements. Because Brazil nuts are so high in selenium, it’s easy to reach toxic levels, so make sure to not exceed two Brazil nuts per day. We like to throw them in our smoothies or toss them in trail mix. Try out our Brazil nut pesto to put over zucchini noodles for dinner!

Prevent cellular damage with Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is well known as an amazing food for your skin—and for good reason! It helps prevent lipid peroxidation, which can lead to cell damage. Aloe isn’t the tastiest item, so this is best thrown into a smoothie, as a supplement, or simply taken as a shot. Grab your girls, fill up some two-ounce glasses with aloe juice, and down some skin brightening shots! You can also try our coconut-kale beauty smoothie recipe and add two ounces of aloe!
